New York man charged with assault in restaurant altercation

A 24-year-old New York man was accused of stabbing a 25-year-old man after an altercation occurred at a Bull and Barrel restaurant on May 28. Authorities stated that the incident took place at the restaurant located on Route 22 in Brewster.

It was not known what started the altercation. When the authorities arrived at the scene, they stated that the accused man was attempting to leave the location as a passenger in a Jeep. He was reportedly detained by the authorities without any incident. The individual who was stabbed was taken to a nearby health care facility for treatment of injuries that were determined to be not life-threatening. The accused man was ultimately charged with second-degree assault and fourth-degree possession of a weapon. When the report was released, he was being held by the authorities on $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond. He was scheduled to appear in court on May 29.

The consequences for being convicted of violent crimes are often severe and can potentially include a lengthy prison sentence depending on the charges. The strategy that a criminal defense attorney may choose to utilize often depends upon the type of evidence the prosecution has against the defendant.

For example, if it is not necessarily clear that the defendant caused the injury, the attorney may argue that the client was not involved in the incident or that the client was misidentified by the injured person. In some cases the attorney may also provide evidence that the defendant was acting in self-defense after being threatened with physical harm.
