Extra police to be stationed around New York City

A new strategy unveiled by New York City police on March 2 aims to increase security on the city's subways. This is in response to a reported increase in stabbings and slashings throughout the area. An increased presence is expected throughout the subway system as well as the Times Square subway station where 60 officers will be present. Although there won't be an officer on every train, there will be an officer at most stations.

A representative from the NYPD said that the goal was to increase passenger safety as well as make people feel better about using the public transportation system. The idea is that people will feel better just seeing the increased police presence. According to statistics, there has been a 19 percent increase in reported crimes occurring throughout the transit system from the corresponding period in 2015.

While there had been an increase in certain types of crime, city officials touted a decrease in murder and shootings, which occurred at a rate not seen since 1994. Furthermore, it was noted that the underground crime rate was much lower than it was in 1990, and overall, the system was safe for everyone in the city to use.

Those who are charged with violent crimes face significant penalties if convicted, including incarceration, and accordingly they may find it advisable to contact a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible in order to construct a defense strategy. In some cases the attorney can help cast doubt about the validity of witness testimony or police statements. It may also be possible to argue that the person charged committed the act in self-defense.
