Man accused of killing 3 arraigned on murder charges

On Aug. 13, a New York man who was accused of killing his mother, sister and a third woman was arraigned on murder charges. The 34-year-old was accused of bludgeoning all three women to death after he was kicked out of the home.

Authorities said that the man returned to his mother's Hempstead home at about 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 12. He allegedly became enraged after finding the door locked. It was alleged that he responded by going into the garage and grabbing a hammer before entering the residence through the basement. He then used the hammer to bludgeon his mother before heading to the upper floor and killing his sister and the other woman. He also allegedly struck one of the sister's friends, but she was able to escape. The man then reportedly fled the scene.

Police said the man was found inside a parked car about a few miles away from the mother's home. He was charged with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. Relatives said that the mother had obtained an order of protection against the man in early 2017 and that the man suffered from mental illness.

Those who are accused of committing violent crimes, such as murder, could face severe consequences. In some cases, for example, a person could be facing life in prison. However, there are several different types of defense a criminal law attorney could utilize to protect the person against the consequences. If the evidence is weak, for example, the attorney may increase doubt that the accused person was involved. In extreme cases, the attorney may use the insanity defense, arguing that the accused person was not responsible due to his or her mental illness.
