Man charged with weapons possession in New York

Reports indicate that a 41-year-old Brooklyn man has been charged with illegal possession of a weapon for allegedly being in possession of brass knuckles. Additionally, police say that they found a M72-LAW rocket launcher at the man's home on Knickerbocker Avenue on Jan. 16. While they originally thought that the weapon was operational, it was later discovered that it was inert and was not designed to be used more than once.

As it was inert, the man will not face charges for possessing the weapon. The rocket launcher was originally used by the military in the 1960s and was considered revolutionary for its time. Police say that they were led to the man's address as part of an investigation that started in the Bronx.

An individual who has been charged with weapons crimes may wish to seek the help of a criminal defense attorney. With the help of an attorney, it may be possible to negotiate a plea bargain or come up with a defense against the charge in court. It may be possible to argue that the weapon was properly registered. It may also be possible to argue that the weapon was only meant to be displayed in the home and never discharged or otherwise used.

If such defenses are successful, it may allow a defendant to avoid some or all possible penalties for a weapons charge. Such penalties may include jail or prison time, a fine and/or probation. Community service may also be a possibility depending on the circumstances in the case. In some cases, a judge may offer a suspended sentence based on the facts in the case or as the result of a plea bargain reached between the relevant parties in court.
