Ex-boyfriend charged in teen's death

A New York minor was killed by an ex-boyfriend on Nov. 2 after she failed to reciprocate his romantic interest, according to authorities. The 19-year-old ex-boyfriend was charged with second-degree murder for the death of the 17-year-old woman.

Authorities said that the teenager and ex-boyfriend had both attended the same school in Wayne County when they started dating. They reportedly dated for about six months before breaking up during the summer. On Nov. 2, the ex-boyfriend told the teen to come to his home to pick up money that he owed her. He then allegedly asked the teen to date him again; however, she declined. He then reportedly grabbed a knife and blocked her ability to leave the residence. The ex-boyfriend said that he stabbed her in the ribs and then in the throat to prevent her from making noise.

Authorities found the teen's body outside when they arrived at the property to investigate a missing person complaint that was filed by her mother. The ex-boyfriend also called authorities and told them that he killed a girl. Authorities said that they recovered the knife that was allegedly used in the attack. The ex-boyfriend did not have any notable criminal history prior to the alleged murder.

When a person is accused of committing violent crimes in New York, the consequences can be severe. For example, a person charged with second-degree murder could get a prison sentence of multiple decades. However, a criminal law attorney could defend a client against the charges. Depending on the case circumstances, the attorney might argue that the defendant did not commit the act and was not armed with a deadly weapon. Otherwise, the attorney could argue that the accused was suffering from extreme emotional disturbance.
