New York man charged with attempted rape, assault

A 32-year-old New York man was arrested on July 5 for allegedly assaulting and attempting to rape a woman on the Upper West Side. The incident occurred the previous evening at around 11 p.m.

According to authorities, the defendant approached a 37-year-old woman after an Uber driver dropped her off near Central Park West and 84th Street. He tried to talk to her, but she did not respond. He then allegedly shoved her to the ground and began stomping, punching and biting her as he ripped off her clothes. The woman reportedly bit him back and cried out for help. Both a doorman and a woman looking out the window of her apartment saw the assault and called the police. The doorman approached the scene to take a picture of the defendant, which distracted him and caused him to end the attack.

Both the defendant and the victim left the scene before the police arrived. However, the woman had to seek medical treatment for fractures to her face and chest and abrasions and bruises on her face, neck and limbs. The defendant, who was living at a homeless shelter on 83rd Street, was arrested the following night. He was charged with attempted rape, sexual abuse, assault and strangulation. According to media reports, he has been arrested 10 other times on charges such as harassment, assault and grand larceny.

Defendants convicted of violent crimes can face harsh consequences, including long prison terms and heavy fines. However, every defendant has the right to be represented by an attorney. Legal counsel could investigate the case, find flaws in the prosecution's account of events, cross-examine witnesses and challenge any evidence presented in court. Legal counsel could also negotiate a plea deal to lower the charges.
