Young man charged in shocking machete murder in Bronx

A 19-year-old suspect in the killing of a male 15-year-old outside a deli on East 183rd Street has been charged with second-degree murder, gang assault and manslaughter. Members of the public jeered him as he exited the courthouse. Six more men, ranging in ages from 18 to 24, suspected of involvement in the attack await extradition to New York.

The murder of the young man has devastated his mother and upset the community. His attackers dragged him out of the deli and slashed his neck with a machete. He attempted to reach the nearby St. Barnabas Hospital but died on the sidewalk. Surveillance video from inside the deli showed that workers took no action to help the man. The deli has closed its doors in fear of protests from outraged people in the Tremont neighborhood. Police speculate that the gang mistook the victim for another person.

Mourners in the community gathered outside of the funeral home to grieve and console the teen's heartbroken mother. People have also constructed a memorial of pictures and candles outside of the deli. Tips related to the attack and possible suspects continue to pour into the police department's tip line.

A person charged with violent crimes often faces hostility and might want the representation of an attorney. A defense attorney could strive to protect the person's rights and obtain fair treatment in court. In addition to guiding a person within the criminal justice system, an attorney might develop a defense strategy. An attorney might question evidence from eyewitnesses or unlawful searches. By weakening a prosecutor's case, an attorney might gain an advantageous plea deal or sow doubt in the minds of jurors at trial.
