Authorities prepare for Labor Day holiday

Police in New York say that they are participating in the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. They will begin enhanced enforcement efforts starting on Aug. 24 through the Labor Day holiday. It is part of a national campaign to reduce the occurrence of drunk driving on roads throughout the United States. The late summer time period tends to see more cars on the road, which authorities say results in a higher number of accidents and fatalities.

Authorities say that there will be more police officers on major roads as well as checkpoints throughout the state. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a person is killed in an alcohol-related crash once every 50 minutes. In 2016, there were 10,497 deaths caused by drunk driving. During the 2017 Labor Day holiday weekend, there were 21,900 citations issued throughout the state. Furthermore, 193 people were taken into custody for drunk driving.

Authorities in New York say that they will also be on the lookout for drivers who are using mobile devices or otherwise driving while distracted. In addition to marked vehicles, concealed vehicles will be used to monitor drivers. While they look like most vehicles on the road, drivers will know if an officer is attempting to conduct a traffic stop when the siren is turned on.

Those who are facing a DUI charge or other traffic violation may benefit from consulting with legal counsel. An attorney may be able to review a case and create a defense to the charge. Defenses may include challenging the validity of a checkpoint or a traffic stop that led to the charge. If successful, a driver may receive a plea deal or have his or her case dropped by a judge.
