Murder charges filed against New York gas station worker

The 71-year-old man accused of killing his co-worker at a gas station on Long Island had been working at the location for 15 years. He entered a not guilty plea during his arraignment, and authorities continue to hold him without bail. Investigators said that he armed himself with a gun the day after he had a disagreement with a co-worker, a 45-year-old man who had been working at the gas station for less than 12 months.

The source of their argument appeared to be the victim's intervention when the older co-worker was arguing with another person. The interference caused a physical fight between the two co-workers. The following day, authorities said that the man shot the younger co-worker in the head. The man now faces charges of murder and criminal use of a firearm. He had a previous criminal history, including violent crimes like convictions for third-degree rape and third-degree assault.

The criminal justice system takes violent crimes seriously, and a person accused of assault, rape, homicide or threats of violence might want the representation of a criminal defense attorney. After examining the evidence, an attorney might develop a defense strategy. Insights about the strength of the evidence provided by an attorney could also help a person consider the choice between standing trial or pursuing a plea bargain.

To defend a person at trial, an attorney could strive to cast doubt on the evidence. If the person decides to accept a plea deal, an attorney might get reduced charges and lenient penalties by negotiating with the prosecutor.
