Fifth man arrested for gang-related murder of 15-year-old

New York authorities have arrested a fifth man in connection with the murder of a 15-year-old Long Island boy in 2017. The killing has been linked to the notorious MS-13 gang.

The defendant, a 20-year-old Roosevelt resident, was allegedly one of several men who attacked and killed the boy with a machete in July 2017. The victim's body was found buried in a wooded area near his home in October. Four other defendants have already been charged with the killing.

The defendant has also been charged in the murder of a 19-year-old man in Roosevelt Preserve County Park. The victim was reportedly lured to the area by people he thought were his friends and then killed. His body was discovered in the park in May. A second defendant, age 19, has also been arrested and charged with the crime. Like the first murder, the killing has been linked to members of the MS-13 gang. The violent group is suspected of killing over two dozen people in Long Island within the past 24 months. According to federal prosecutors, there are likely thousands of MS-13 gang members in the U.S.

Defendants charged with murder and other violent crimes have the right to retain legal representation and mount a vigorous defense against the accusations. Attorneys could counsel defendants as they make their way through the legal system, protecting their rights and ensuring they understand their legal options. In some cases, an attorney may advise challenging the evidence in court. In other circumstances, an attorney may recommend negotiating a plea deal with prosecutors, which could lead to a more lenient sentence.
