Pregnant woman charged with felony drunk driving

A 26-year-old pregnant New York woman is facing felony drunk driving and misdemeanor drug possession charges after allegedly attempting to flee from police in Monroe County on the evening of Aug. 26. Reports indicate that the woman was issued appearance tickets and is scheduled to appear before the Rochester City Court on Sept. 20 for arraignment.

According to a Rochester Police Department report, the sequence of events began at approximately 9:45 p.m. when officers allegedly noticed an individual vomiting out of the side window of a car parked on State Street. Officers say that the car departed the scene at a high rate of speed as they approached. A description of the vehicle was then released to area law enforcement agencies, and it was soon spotted in the vicinity of State Route 104 and Lake Avenue by New York State Police troopers.

The woman is said to have told troopers that she was not aware of the Rochester police officers and had not attempted to flee. She also allegedly admitted to drinking at a local bar before getting behind the wheel. The woman was taken into custody after failing a field sobriety test according to reports. Police say that the drug charges were added after cocaine was discovered during an inventory of her vehicle.

Experienced criminal defense attorneys would likely advise those facing felony drunk driving charges to make no admissions before speaking with a lawyer even when their situations appear quite grim. The vast majority of criminal cases are resolved at the negotiating table, and it may be far more difficult for attorneys to negotiate plea agreements with prosecutors when their clients have confessed.
